Bird Nesting Season: What Tree Work Can and Can’t Be Done 🪺
From early March through to late August, the UK enters bird nesting season, a crucial time when many bird species build nests, lay eggs, and raise their young.
Here at A Cut Above, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously. That’s why we want to help our customers understand what work can and can’t be carried out during this period—and how you can help protect the wildlife in your own garden.
Why Bird Nesting Season Matters 🐦⬛
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it’s an offence to intentionally disturb or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it's in use or being built. This applies to all species, not just the rare or protected ones. Fines can be significant, but more importantly, disturbing nesting birds can disrupt the local ecosystem.
What You CAN'T Do ❌ :
During nesting season, we generally advise against:
Harsh hedge cutting or reductions where nests have been identified or nesting activity is present.
Crown reductions, deadwood removal or pollarding if there’s any sign of nesting activity
What You CAN Do ✅:
There are still plenty of jobs that can go ahead safely during nesting season, including:
Crown reductions, deadwood removal or pollarding provided no nesting activity is present.
Emergency tree work, especially if there’s a risk to safety or property.
Selective pruning, following a nest inspection.
Hedge trimming following nest inspection with no nesting activity identfied.
Stump grinding, as it doesn’t disturb above-ground habitats.
What We Do 👷📋:
Before any tree or hedge work begins, we thoroughly inspect every tree or hedge for signs of active nests. If a nest is found, the work will be postponed until it’s safe to proceed.
We also ask our customers to be vigilant—if you notice birds flying in and out of a tree or hedge, or hear chicks calling, please let us know prior to us arriving. Together, we can ensure no wildlife is harmed.
Supporting Wildlife-Friendly Tree Care 🌳
We believe in responsible tree work that balances the needs of homeowners with those of our local wildlife. That’s why every job begins with a careful assessment—and why we encourage our clients to stay informed and observant, especially during these crucial months.
